Video of Tsvi Bisk's Talk Now Available

Hi, Everyone,

We are very pleased to announce that Tsvi Bisk's recent talk at IBM Israel’s “Smarter Planet” venue in Petah Tikvah on October 12th, 2010, is now available for viewing. This is a great opportunity for those who missed it, and for those who would like to experience it again.

The presentation was entitled: The Economic Opportunities of the “Peak Availability of Cheap Oil”. Tsvi outlines why the expected tremendous rise in the cost of energy in general and transportation fuels in particular over the next decade is inevitable:

1) The massive growth of the global middle class.

2) The increased domestic use of oil by the oil exporters will decrease the amount of oil available for export.

3) EROEI — “Energy Return on Energy Invested” refers to the increased amount of energy it takes to produce energy and thus decreased availability of energy. In 1900 it took one barrel of oil equivalent of energy to produce 100 barrels of oil – today it takes one barrel to produce 10 barrels (and this is still falling).

Tsvi explains how Israeli start ups as well as legacy companies (in IT, agricultural technology, water management, clean-tech, etc.) might be able to take advantage of these developments and create a dynamic new export sector for Israel’s economy.

Enjoy!

4 of the 40 Companies Selected to Present at the Angel Capital Summit are Members of IsraelStartupNetwork!

Denver Skyline

Of the 36 for-profit and 4 non-profit organizations selected by The Angel Capital Summit to present their business concepts on December 7, four are from our group!  Congratulations to: InnoSave, SentryCom, and Leviathan Energy (selected for two separate products)!
All participants received a detailed analysis by the reviewer/s, which we hope, together with the Benchmark Survey, will prove very helpful.
Presenting companies are required to go through an intensive coaching program before the conference. This coaching guides them in understanding the individual components of their business so that they can present a big picture view as concisely as possible.
Please contact me regarding any problems.
I plan to be in Denver for the event, encouraging investments in Israeli high tech.
Congratulations, good luck, and thanks to everyone for participating.
Arlene

Featured Startup: ID-U Biometrics, Dr. Daphna Palti-Wasserman – CEO

ID-U’s founder and CEO, Dr. Daphna Palti-Wasserman, is a graduate of Israel’s prestigious Technion, and has amassed 15 years of experience in R&D - in signal and image processing - as well as in management, having held positions in IBM research labs and at several startups. Daphna founded ID-U in response to the needs of the commercial identification market, which until now, has relied primarily on passwords for security – a rather ineffective solution that does not meet critical industry demands.

ID-U offers a disruptive concept in biometric identification – a stimulus-driven system in which:

  • a user watches a moving target (random stimulus)
  • a low resolution camera acquires the user’s eye-movement response
  • a processing unit receives the response and uses both stimuli and response to identify the user

The use of the kinetic response to form a user’s identification signature introduces a new dimension – 4D Biometrics. This approach, which can be used either in a standalone product or as part of a multi-modal security system, has a number of advantages:

  • Spoof Proof – Since identification is based on dynamic patterns, theft or reproduction of the response (spoofing) is impossible
  • Software-based – Requires only standard camera and screen, can be easily and inexpensively integrated into existing systems
  • Convenient Interface – Familiar, easy-to-use interface does not require free hands, can be used with gloves, protective glasses, etc.
  • High performance in difficult environmental conditions (dirt, noise, illumination)

Though still in its early stages, ID-U has already received recognition from several major sources. The company was voted ‘Best Startup of the Year’ by the Israel Venture Association in 2008. ID-U was also selected for Innovate 2010, Tel Aviv, and presented at the prestigious Biometric Consortium Conference in Tampa, Florida, this past September. The company was also voted one of the four Europe Finalists in the Best Security Startup of the ‘Global Security Challenge Competition 2010’ - and will compete in London on November 11-12 for the title of ‘Best Security Startup’.

In addition to music and hiking, photography is one of Daphna’s favorite hobbies. In fact, she has been a serious photographer for 30 years. She studied at The School of Visual Arts in New York, and has had several photography exhibitions at theaters, museums, and galleries.
